What is root canal treatment

Saving a tooth that
others might remove.

Root canal treatment, sometimes called endodontics, is the process of removing infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, cleaning and shaping the root canals, and sealing the tooth to prevent reinfection. It is carried out under local anaesthetic and, for the vast majority of patients, is no more uncomfortable than having a filling.

Despite its reputation, modern root canal treatment is a straightforward and well-tolerated procedure. At Parchment Street Dental, we take our time, explain every step, and ensure you are completely comfortable before we begin. The goal is always to save your natural tooth, because nothing replaces it quite as well.

A tooth that has had root canal treatment can last a lifetime with the right care. Saving it is almost always worth it.

Comfortable from start to finish

The reputation of root canal treatment is largely undeserved. With effective local anaesthetic and a calm, unhurried approach, the procedure is no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. We ensure the tooth is completely numb before we begin, and we never proceed until you feel entirely ready. You will feel pressure, but no pain.

02

Saving your natural tooth

Root canal treatment allows us to remove the infection from inside the tooth, clean and seal the root canals, and restore the tooth so it can continue to function naturally. Keeping your own tooth is almost always the better long-term outcome, and root canal treatment makes that possible in the vast majority of cases, even where infection has been present for some time.

03

Specialist endodontist

Your treatment is carried out by Dr Ammar al Hourani, a dedicated specialist endodontist with advanced training in root canal and complex endodontic care. Seeing a specialist rather than a general dentist means greater precision, better visibility using specialist instrumentation, and a higher likelihood of a successful, long-lasting outcome.

04

A straightforward recovery

Some mild sensitivity in the days following treatment is normal and usually settles quickly. We provide clear aftercare guidance before you leave, so you know exactly what to expect and how to manage any discomfort. Most patients return to their usual routine the same day. We are always available if you have concerns in the days that follow.

Frequently asked questions

Things people
often wonder.

Everything you might want to know before your root canal appointment. Still have a question? We are always happy to help.

Root canal treatment has a reputation it does not deserve. Carried out under local anaesthetic, the procedure itself should be no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. We apply a topical numbing gel before the anaesthetic and ensure the tooth is completely numb before we begin. You may be aware of pressure during the treatment, but you should feel no pain. Mild tenderness in the days following is normal and usually settles quickly with over-the-counter pain relief.

Most root canal treatments are completed over one to two appointments, depending on the complexity of the tooth and the extent of the infection. Your endodontic consultation with Dr al Hourani is separate and allows him to assess the tooth fully before treatment begins. We will always give you a clear outline of the process and how many visits to expect before anything starts.

In most cases, yes. A tooth that has had root canal treatment becomes more brittle over time, and a crown protects it from fracture and restores full biting function. For front teeth, a well-placed filling is sometimes sufficient, but for back teeth a crown is usually strongly recommended. We discuss this with you at the consultation stage so it comes as no surprise, and we factor it into your overall treatment plan from the outset.

A dental infection will not resolve on its own. Left untreated, it is likely to spread to the surrounding bone and tissue, cause increasing pain, and eventually result in the loss of the tooth. In some cases, the infection can spread more widely and become a more serious health concern. Antibiotics can temporarily reduce symptoms, but they do not remove the source of the infection. Root canal treatment or extraction are the only definitive solutions.

With good oral hygiene and an appropriate final restoration, a tooth treated with root canal treatment can last many years, often a lifetime. Success rates are high, particularly when the treatment is carried out by a specialist and the tooth is properly restored afterwards with a crown. We will always give you an honest assessment of the long-term prognosis for your specific tooth at the consultation stage.
