More than a
quick polish.
A dental hygiene appointment is a professional clean that removes plaque and tartar your toothbrush simply cannot reach. Even with excellent daily brushing and flossing, deposits build up over time in areas that are difficult to access, and only a hygienist can remove them safely and effectively.
At Parchment Street Dental, our hygienists carry out a thorough scale and polish, check your gum health, and offer personalised advice on keeping your teeth and gums in the best possible condition between visits. We also offer AirFlow treatment for more stubborn staining and deeper cleaning where needed.
Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. We take them seriously.

a hygienist
makes.
Regular hygiene visits do far more than keep your teeth clean. They protect your long-term oral health, help prevent gum disease, and can even have an impact on your wider wellbeing.
Removes what brushing cannot
No matter how carefully you brush and floss, plaque hardens into tartar in areas that are difficult to reach at home. Once it forms, only a hygienist can remove it safely. Left untreated, tartar leads to gum disease, which is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults.
Protects your gums long-term
Gum disease is often painless in its early stages, which is exactly why regular hygiene visits are so important. We check your gum health at every appointment and can identify early signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease before they progress, keeping your gums healthy for life.
Fresher breath, brighter smile
A professional clean removes surface staining and the bacteria that cause bad breath. Many patients notice an immediate difference in both the brightness of their smile and their confidence after a hygiene visit. It is one of the quickest and most effective ways to refresh your appearance.
Advice tailored to you
Every patient is different. Our hygienists take the time to understand your oral health, your habits, and your goals, then offer personalised guidance on brushing technique, interdental cleaning, diet, and anything else that will make a real difference to your day-to-day routine.

Cleaner teeth with
AirFlow.
AirFlow is an advanced dental cleaning technology that uses a controlled jet of air, warm water, and fine powder to gently remove staining, plaque, and biofilm from the surface of your teeth and around the gumline. It reaches areas that traditional scaling cannot, making it one of the most effective hygiene treatments available.
It is particularly effective for removing staining caused by coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking, and leaves teeth feeling noticeably smoother and looking brighter immediately after treatment. It is also the preferred method for patients with periodontal disease, as it cleans more thoroughly and more comfortably than traditional instruments alone.
Gentle, precise, and noticeably effective. Most patients describe it as one of the most comfortable hygiene treatments they have experienced.
Things people
often wonder.
Everything you might want to know before your hygiene appointment. Still have a question? We are always happy to help.
We recommend a hygiene visit every six months for most patients, which aligns with your regular check-up schedule. However, patients with a history of gum disease, or those who are more prone to tartar build-up, may benefit from more frequent visits every three to four months. We will always advise you on the right frequency for your needs.
For most patients, a hygiene appointment is completely comfortable. If your gums are inflamed or you have sensitive teeth, you may feel some mild tenderness during scaling, but our hygienists work gently and at your pace. We can also apply a topical anaesthetic if needed. Many patients find that after regular visits, their appointments become increasingly comfortable as their gum health improves.
A scale and polish uses specialist instruments to remove tartar and plaque, followed by a polishing paste to smooth the tooth surface. AirFlow uses a jet of air, water, and fine powder to remove biofilm, staining, and deposits, particularly around the gumline and in areas that traditional instruments find harder to reach. AirFlow is often more comfortable and more thorough, especially for patients with periodontal concerns or heavy staining.
